Assistantships and Fellowships

The Department awards assistantships and fellowships to outstanding applicants on a competitive basis. Many incoming students are awarded Teaching Assistantships (TA) for their first year. These typically range from half-time (20 hr/wk) to quarter-time (ten hr/wk) appointments for the academic year (9 mo). These may be continued for additional years (if teaching evaluations and research progress are good) but in many cases students are awarded Research Assistantships (RA) that provide equivalent financial support to do research under the guidance of their chosen advisor.

International students must submit satisfactory scores on the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or the SPEAK test (administered at UF during orientation week; cost of $60) to be eligible for a Teaching Assistantship.

A number of different fellowships are available to the very best students.(e.g. Grinter and Alumni Fellowships). Each of these has specific requirements and benefits for the student. More information regarding University Fellowships can be found at: http://www.aa.ufl.edu/fellows/

Assistantships and fellowships include a stipend, tuition waiver, and insurance coverage for the student.
