Noble Gas Laboratory

Ar/Ar Mass Spectrometer

The 40Ar/39Ar dating facility features a MAP215-50 noble gas mass spectrometer, with two electron multipliers and one faraday collector.  The mass spectrometer is connected to a custom, automated stainless steel extraction/purification line with sample heating and gas extraction accomplished with either a Modifications Ltd. resistance furnace, CO2 IR laser, or pulsed Excimer DUV (193 nm) laser.  Our system is designed for both geochronology and thermochronology.
